Pakistan has achieved a major milestone in its naval modernization programme with the arrival of its first Hangor-class submarine at Karachi Port.
The development marks an important step in strengthening the country’s maritime defence capabilities. Moreover, it highlights the growing strategic defence cooperation between Pakistan and China.
The advanced submarine is expected to significantly enhance the operational strength of the Pakistan Navy.
First Hangor-Class Submarine Reaches Karachi
The first Hangor-class submarine arrived at Karachi Port and received a traditional naval welcome.
Pakistan Navy officers, personnel, and crew members’ families attended the reception ceremony. The occasion reflected the importance of the submarine’s induction into the naval fleet.
According to the Pakistan Navy, the vessel represents a key addition to the country’s maritime defence assets.
The arrival also signals continued progress in the Pakistan Navy’s long-term modernization efforts.
Advanced Technology to Strengthen Naval Capability
The Hangor-class submarine features advanced combat systems designed for modern naval warfare.
In addition, it carries sophisticated sensors that improve situational awareness and operational effectiveness.
One of its most important features is Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology. This capability allows the submarine to remain underwater for extended periods without surfacing frequently.
As a result, the vessel can conduct operations more discreetly and efficiently.
Furthermore, enhanced stealth features reduce the chances of detection during missions.
Together, these technologies are expected to improve the Pakistan Navy’s combat capability and underwater operational strength.
Traditional Welcome Marks Historic Arrival
The submarine received a ceremonial welcome upon reaching Karachi.
“Cadets of Pakistan Naval Academy presented a ceremonial salute to the incoming submarine and its crew, accompanied by a fly-past by PN Z9EC helicopters,” said the Pakistan Navy.
The ceremony reflected the significance of the occasion for the country’s naval forces.
Later, officials held a reception ceremony at the Pakistan Navy Dockyard to celebrate the submarine’s arrival.
Commander Pakistan Fleet Vice Admiral Abdul Munib attended the event as the chief guest.
The gathering brought together senior naval officials and personnel to mark the historic milestone.
The Historic Legacy of the Name Hangor
The name Hangor occupies a special place in Pakistan’s naval history.
It recalls the achievements of the original PNS Hangor during the 1971 Pakistan-India war.
During that conflict, PNS Hangor became the first submarine since World War II to sink a warship.
The submarine successfully targeted and sank the Indian frigate INS Khukri.
As a result, the name Hangor remains closely associated with one of the most significant moments in Pakistan Navy history.
The new class of submarines carries forward that legacy while incorporating modern technology and advanced capabilities.
Eight Submarines Planned for the Fleet
The Pakistan Navy plans to induct a total of eight Hangor-class submarines.
The first submarine of the class was launched in April 2024.
Subsequently, the second, third, and fourth submarines were launched during 2025.
These launches demonstrate steady progress in the submarine acquisition programme.
Moreover, the planned induction of eight submarines will further strengthen Pakistan’s maritime security and underwater warfare capabilities.
A Key Step in Naval Modernization
The arrival of the first Hangor-class submarine represents more than the addition of a new vessel.
It reflects Pakistan’s broader efforts to modernize its naval forces and enhance maritime readiness.
With advanced combat systems, modern sensors, AIP technology, and improved stealth capabilities, the submarine is expected to play a crucial role in future naval operations.
As additional submarines join the fleet, the Pakistan Navy will continue expanding its operational capabilities and strengthening its presence in regional waters.
