Jose Mourinho is beginning his second spell at Real Madrid with Barcelona once again looming over his plans. The Portuguese coach returns to the Spanish giants 16 years after first taking charge of the club.
However, his mission remains familiar: challenge Barcelona and restore Real Madrid’s dominance in Spanish football.
Mourinho’s first match will come against Espanyol in La Liga on Saturday.
Therefore, the opening fixture offers an early glimpse into how the veteran coach plans to reshape his team.
Mourinho Returns With a Familiar Mission
Mourinho first managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013.
During that period, he battled Barcelona and coach Pep Guardiola during one of Spanish football’s fiercest rivalries.
Now, he returns after Real Madrid endured two seasons without winning a major trophy.
President Florentino Perez has turned to Mourinho once again, hoping he can restore the club’s intensity and competitive edge.
The Portuguese coach also faces a different challenge this time.
Real Madrid have experienced dressing-room turbulence and struggled to find the right balance under several coaches.
Carlo Ancelotti, Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa all faced difficulties fitting the team’s attacking stars together.
Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham offer enormous attacking quality.
However, combining them without weakening the team defensively has remained a major challenge.
Mourinho now has the task of finding that balance without limiting their attacking potential.
A More Mature Mourinho Returns
Mourinho insists he has changed since his first Real Madrid tenure. After years of coaching in England, Italy, Turkey and elsewhere, he says experience has made him more mature.
“I’m much more mature, less emotional, and more in control… as always, learning from mistakes,” said the 63-year-old.
At the same time, Mourinho rejected the suggestion that his approach has become less exciting.
He insisted that he was not “more boring”.
His early message at Real Madrid has instead focused heavily on discipline, responsibility and hard work.
“I am here… to create a culture of work, responsibility, ambition,” Mourinho said.
He described his return to the club as a “mission”.
Real Madrid Strengthen Their Squad
Real Madrid have also provided Mourinho with significant resources during the summer transfer window. The club spent heavily while adding several high-profile players to the squad.
Ivorian winger Yan Diomande became the club’s record signing after arriving for 140 million euros ($163 million).
Real Madrid also brought in Bernardo Silva and Marc Cucurella among several notable additions. However, questions remain about the midfield.
Some observers believe Madrid needed further reinforcement after failing to sign Rodri. The Spanish midfielder had been linked with Real Madrid before eventually joining Barcelona.
Meanwhile, Diomande gives Mourinho another major attacking option in an already star-studded squad.
Bernardo Silva could prove particularly important because of his ability to provide greater balance.
Can Bernardo Silva Solve Madrid’s Midfield Problem?
Real Madrid have spent years trying to replace the influence of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.
Both midfielders played a crucial role in controlling matches during their long careers at the club.
Their ability to dictate the tempo also allowed Madrid’s forwards greater freedom in attack.
Moreover, their presence helped reduce the team’s exposure to sustained pressure from opponents.
Silva is not a direct replacement for either midfielder.
Nevertheless, his technical ability could provide Mourinho with another solution to Madrid’s persistent midfield concerns.
Whether that will be enough remains uncertain.
The biggest test will come against strong opponents, particularly Barcelona.
Barcelona Awaits in the First Clasico
Mourinho knows the intensity of the Madrid-Barcelona rivalry better than most coaches.
His first spell at Real Madrid was closely associated with his battles against Guardiola and Barcelona.
The rivalry became increasingly heated during those years.
Touchline confrontations, disputes over refereeing decisions and tense encounters added further drama to the Clasico.
Mourinho eventually helped Real Madrid break Barcelona’s domestic dominance.
Madrid won the 2011-12 La Liga title with a record 100 points.
Now, another Clasico is already attracting attention.
Real Madrid will visit Barcelona in late October for the first Clasico of the season.
Before that encounter, Mourinho has around two months to prepare his squad.
His immediate priority will be building fitness, confidence and unity within the team.
Most importantly, he must ensure Madrid’s attacking stars work together without weakening the defensive structure.
Real Madrid Begin La Liga Campaign
Mourinho’s second Real Madrid reign officially gets underway against Espanyol on Saturday.
The fixture gives him an opportunity to begin shaping the team according to his philosophy.
Meanwhile, Barcelona will face Elche on Sunday as the defending Spanish champions begin their own campaign.
The opening weekend therefore offers an early look at the two Spanish heavyweights.
Mourinho’s return has already added another layer of intrigue to a rivalry that needs little introduction.
For Real Madrid, however, the bigger question is whether the Portuguese coach can turn his return into another successful era.
