ISLAMABAD: Senior journalist Matiullah Jan has announced his resignation from Neo News, days after a controversial event he organized at the National Press Club triggered sharp backlash within sections of the media community. The development has intensified debate about press freedom, professional ethics, and the role of journalists in politically sensitive environments.
Event at Press Club Triggers Dispute Within Media Circles
Jan, widely known for his investigative reporting and outspoken criticism of government policies, hosted a dinner on April 25 for foreign journalists covering USโIran diplomatic talks in Islamabad. However, the leadership of the National Press Club asked him to postpone the gathering because it coincided with an official cultural event organized by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting at the same venue. Nevertheless, he proceeded with the event and delivered remarks alongside journalist Asad Toor that criticized restrictions on press freedom, alleged harassment of journalists, and highlighted cases involving legal activist Imaan Mazari.
Critics subsequently accused Jan of misrepresenting the dinner as an official National Press Club event and misusing the clubโs name and logo. In addition, controversy escalated when American journalist Caitlin Doornbos stated that she felt deceived after the gathering shifted from professional networking to political criticism of the Pakistani state. As a result, pro-government commentators and some office-bearers strongly condemned the event, while hashtags criticizing Jan quickly gained traction on social media platforms.
Resignation Announcement Fuels Debate on Press Freedom
On April 27, Jan announced on social media that his professional journey with Neo News had abruptly ended after nearly three years of association. He thanked the organization for its support but did not clarify whether he resigned voluntarily or faced external pressure. Meanwhile, his independent digital platform, Matiullah Jan TV, continues to operate and publish content regularly.
The controversy has highlighted long-standing tensions within the National Press Club, a venue historically used for political activity, press conferences, and protests. While critics described Janโs remarks as damaging to Pakistanโs image, supporters argued that raising concerns about press freedom before an international audience remains a journalistโs professional responsibility. Ultimately, the episode has reinforced ongoing debates about media independence, accountability, and ethical conduct in Pakistanโs evolving information landscape.
