Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has expressed confidence in achieving food self-sufficiency by 2030. He said relevant departments have already received directives to meet this objective.
Speaking at a World Food Safety Day ceremony in Peshawar, Afridi outlined the government’s plans. The event was organized by the KP Food Safety and Halal Food Authority. He announced increased budget allocations for the food department in the upcoming provincial budget.
The chief minister said the government will build modern wheat storage facilities. These technology-driven centers will strengthen food security and reduce post-harvest losses. Moreover, the government aims to improve agricultural productivity across the province.
Food Security Remains Government Priority
Afridi stressed the importance of promoting safe food practices among citizens. He said public awareness plays a key role in ensuring healthy consumption habits. Furthermore, he credited the Food Safety and Halal Food Authority for improving food standards.
The chief minister stated that comprehensive planning continues across multiple sectors. Consequently, the government expects significant progress toward self-sufficiency goals. He also emphasized the need for reliable food supplies in the future.
Afridi highlighted the importance of strengthening long-term food security. He noted that improved infrastructure would support sustainable agricultural growth. Therefore, increased investment remains a central part of the strategy.
CM Criticizes Federal Policies and Delays
Afridi also criticized the federal government over several development issues. He claimed Punjab suspended wheat supplies to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Additionally, he said repeated provincial requests received no positive response.
The chief minister expressed concern over delays in major development projects. He noted that KP allocated Rs3 billion for the Chashma Right Bank Canal Project. However, he said the federal government provided no corresponding allocation.
Afridi also cited delays involving the Northern Bypass Project and Peshawar Bus Terminal. He further raised concerns about restrictions on natural gas supplies. According to him, such policies negatively affect households across the province.
