North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has announced an ambitious new direction for the countryโs naval development, outlining plans to build two major warships annually over the next five years as part of a broader military modernization strategy.
The announcement came during a commissioning ceremony marking the deployment of North Koreaโs newly introduced multipurpose destroyer, Choe Hyon.
Kim Announces Long-Term Naval Expansion Strategy
During the ceremony held at Nampho port, Kim emphasized the need to strengthen the countryโs naval forces and described maritime development as a key national priority.
According to the plan, North Korea aims to construct two warships each year with capacities similar to the 5,000-metric-ton Choe Hyon vessel. The strategy reflects a long-term effort to increase operational capabilities and expand the navyโs role.
Kim also revealed that another 5,000-ton destroyer, named Kang Kon, is expected to enter service in the near future.
In addition, North Korea plans to develop larger 10,000-ton strategic warships as part of its future naval roadmap.
Choe Hyon Completes Testing Phase
North Koreaโs newly commissioned destroyer reportedly completed military operational testing over the past 14 months before entering service.
The vessel now represents a central part of the countryโs evolving maritime plans.
The leadership presented the deployment as a milestone in strengthening naval readiness and expanding military capabilities.
Kang Kon Set for Deployment After Repairs
Kim stated that the destroyer Kang Kon will also join the fleet after undergoing repairs.
The vessel had previously suffered damage during a launch ceremony and partially capsized.
However, authorities later restored the warship and continued preparations for deployment.
Its return forms part of the broader naval expansion initiative.
Kim Calls Navy the Weakest Military Branch
During his remarks, Kim acknowledged that the navy had historically remained the least developed component of North Koreaโs armed forces.
He argued that future investment and modernization would significantly change its capabilities.
According to Kim, the transformation of the navy would extend beyond equipment upgrades and would also affect its overall position and operational responsibilities.
He stated that the military branch would evolve into โsomething incredible beyond imagination.โ
Focus Turns to Modern Naval Infrastructure
Kim stressed that infrastructure development remains essential to support future military goals.
He described the construction of a โmodernised naval baseโ as a necessary and urgent priority.
He also revealed that senior officials from the ruling Workersโ Partyโs Central Committee recently discussed plans for additional naval facilities.
The discussions focused on supporting larger fleets and strengthening maritime operations.
Naval Nuclearisation Remains Part of Long-Term Vision
Kim further stated that the navyโs nuclearisation programme continues to move forward. He said the process is progressing independently and contributes to North Koreaโs broader deterrence strategy.
However, he did not provide operational details or timelines.
The latest announcement signals North Koreaโs continued focus on naval expansion and infrastructure development as part of its wider military objectives.
