Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has cautioned that technical issues in the recently signed memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran may take time to resolve, while warning that Israel could attempt to derail the diplomatic process.
Speaking to Anadolu during a visit to Cairo on Sunday, Fidan said the remaining technical details of the agreement were significant and could lead to temporary deadlocks. He stressed that all parties should be prepared for possible setbacks as negotiations move forward.
Fidan also alleged that Israel could seek to undermine the process if an opportunity arises. He said the possibility of external efforts to disrupt the agreement should not be overlooked.
The Turkish foreign minister was in the Egyptian capital to attend the Fourth Consultative Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Tรผrkiye, Egypt, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. On the sidelines of the gathering, he held separate meetings with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohi El-Din Salim, according to the Turkish Foreign Ministry.
Diplomatic sources also confirmed that Fidan met Massad Boulos, senior adviser to US President Donald Trump for Arab and African affairs, during his visit.
Reflecting on his diplomatic engagements, Fidan described the past two days as highly productive. He said Tรผrkiye, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United States held important discussions on Libya, as well as developments in the Mediterranean and Africa.
He added that the four countries exchanged views on key regional issues and reached common ground on several matters, strengthening cooperation through the consultation mechanism.
Fidan also met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Sunday. He said the two leaders reviewed the positive outcomes achieved through the four-country consultation format and discussed ways to enhance regional coordination.
The Turkish foreign minister said he conveyed greetings and messages from President Recep Tayyip Erdoฤan to the Egyptian president during the meeting.
