Iran’s foreign minister is set to return to Pakistan on Sunday, as mediators work to keep delicate peace talks alive.
Previously, Araghchi had made a trip to Islamabad prior to his journey to Oman to hold more talks. However, other members of the Iranian delegation traveled back to Tehran to receive directions regarding their negotiation positions.
Diplomatic momentum faces fresh uncertainty
To begin with, the US stated that its peace delegation comprised Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to go to Pakistan for further discussion. Nevertheless, President Donald Trump changed the mind, arguing that “there’s not a lot to talk about” in such circumstances. However, he implied that the Iran’s proposal underwent fast changes because of the cancellation.
Furthermore, Araghchi claimed that the previous talks held in Islamabad turned out to be fruitful. Indeed, the diplomat met Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, military chief Asim Munir, as well as the country’s foreign minister Ishaq Dar. However, the Iranian diplomat raised doubts concerning America’s involvement in the diplomatic process.
Regional tensions deepen amid military actions
However, the tensions keep increasing beyond the confines of the negotiations. It is important to note that Iran continues to block access to the Strait of Hormuz, which plays an important part in supplying the world with oil. Consequently, the United States has taken a step toward placing sanctions on the ports of Iran.
Moreover, there has been an increase in violence in Lebanon. Israeli forces attacked Hezbollah targets due to their breach of ceasefire agreements. According to reports, some lives were lost in the process.
Thus, chances for achieving stability and peaceful negotiations continue to dwindle despite continuous diplomatic discussions.
