ISLAMABAD: The social media platform Instagram has started testing a new standalone application called “Instants,” aiming to expand its presence in spontaneous and informal content sharing. Moreover, the experiment reflects a growing industry shift toward unfiltered, real-time communication similar to formats popularized by Snapchat and BeReal. Currently, the app operates in limited testing in Italy and Spain on both iOS and Android devices, allowing Meta to evaluate user engagement before a wider rollout.
Unlike traditional posting formats, Instants focuses on capturing everyday moments that disappear quickly. Consequently, users can share photos and videos that vanish after a single view or within 24 hours. The app encourages users to “share the realest moments” of their day, prioritizing authenticity over edited or curated content. Additionally, users must take media directly through the in-app camera, as the platform does not allow uploads from the device’s gallery, reinforcing its emphasis on spontaneity.
Simple design promotes authentic social interaction
Instants provides minimal editing tools, limiting users to basic text overlays. Therefore, the design discourages heavy filtering or enhancement, pushing users to focus on genuine, unpolished communication. Furthermore, content can be shared either with mutual Instagram followers or Close Friends lists, maintaining consistency with existing social connections across Instagram. Posts remain visible for 24 hours but disappear after being viewed once, strengthening the app’s focus on fleeting digital interaction.
Meta has not confirmed a global launch yet; however, a spokesperson stated that the company continues testing multiple versions of Instants to explore how users prefer to connect. Meanwhile, the app also integrates with Instagram accounts, allowing users to access it either separately or within the main platform. This strategy highlights Meta’s broader approach of experimenting across formats before committing to large-scale releases.
In addition, the company has recently tested monetization features within Instagram, including a premium plan called Instagram Plus in select markets. The subscription includes features such as anonymous Story viewing, expanded audience segmentation, and enhanced Story visibility tools. As a result, Meta continues to balance innovation in social engagement with new revenue-driven product strategies.
