Google announced lower Play Store service fees while expanding payment options for developers worldwide. The changes begin June 30, 2026, across selected regions before reaching additional markets. Furthermore, Google separated Play Store service fees from billing system charges for greater transparency.
New Fee Structure And Billing Changes
Developers will pay a 10% service fee on their first $1 million annually. Additionally, all auto-renewing subscriptions will receive the same 10% service fee. This rate applies regardless of annual developer earnings.
However, transactions above $1 million will follow different service fee rates. New app installs will face a 20% service fee after regional implementation begins. Existing installs completed earlier will continue paying a 25% service fee.
Meanwhile, external website purchases linked from existing installs will carry a 20% service fee. Developers using Google Play Billing must also pay a separate 5% billing fee. Consequently, developers paying a 10% service fee will pay 15% overall.
Alternative billing providers and external websites will avoid the additional billing fee.
Alternative Payments And Global Rollout
Google will allow developers to offer independent billing systems alongside Google Play Billing. Moreover, developers can direct users toward external websites for eligible purchases.
Participating developers must enrol, integrate required APIs, and report completed transactions. However, service fees will still apply despite alternative payment methods.
Google also introduced updated developer programmes offering reduced service fees for qualifying applications. Eligible developers will pay lower rates across subscriptions and other transactions.
These programme benefits begin September 30, 2026. Australia follows that schedule, while Japan and South Korea receive updates before year-end. Finally, Google expects worldwide availability by September 30, 2027.
