Five people died in a shooting at a youth welfare centre in northern Germany on Monday. Police arrested the suspected gunman and another alleged perpetrator following the attack. Authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the deadly incident.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the welfare centre in Stade, west of Hamburg. Police officers wearing protective gear secured the area. Meanwhile, ambulances transported injured victims for medical treatment.
Police Launch Investigation After Deadly Attack
Police confirmed multiple homicides occurred at the youth welfare facility. They said five people suffered fatal injuries during the shooting. Additionally, several others sustained injuries and received emergency care.
Investigators arrested the suspected gunman and a second alleged perpetrator. However, police have not released further details about a possible motive. Authorities also confirmed there is no longer any danger to the public.
Earlier, police urged residents to avoid the affected area. Helicopters hovered overhead while officers carried out a major security operation. Local media showed emergency vehicles lining streets near the scene.
Germany Faces Another Rare Mass Shooting
Germany maintains some of Europe’s strictest gun laws. Applicants under 25 must complete psychiatric assessments before obtaining firearm licences. Therefore, mass shootings remain relatively uncommon across the country.
However, Monday’s attack ranks among Germany’s deadliest shootings in recent years. In 2020, a far-right extremist killed nine people in Hanau. Later, a former Jehovah’s Witness member killed six people in Hamburg during a 2023 attack.
Authorities continue gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses. Meanwhile, investigators are working to establish the sequence of events leading to the shooting.
