Rare Rescue Brings Hope Amid Disaster
A father and his son were rescued alive from the rubble of a collapsed building in Venezuela on Sunday, four days after powerful earthquakes devastated parts of the country.
The emotional rescue took place in La Guaira, the coastal state worst hit by Wednesdayโs earthquakes. The disaster has killed at least 1,450 people, while thousands more remain missing beneath collapsed buildings.
The rescue gave fresh hope to emergency teams working in extremely difficult conditions. French and American rescue workers were involved in the operation as they continued searching for survivors despite the passing of the critical rescue window.
The father and son were visibly weak when they were brought out. Both were wearing masks as rescue workers carried them on improvised fabric stretchers through streets covered with debris. A crowd gathered near the waiting ambulance as the pair were moved for urgent medical care.
Rescue Teams Worked for 12 Hours
The operation took around 12 hours of careful and difficult work. Rescue teams used specialised search cameras to locate the trapped victims under unstable rubble.
Workers had to move slowly because the damaged structure remained dangerous. Any sudden movement could have caused more debris to fall.
Before pulling the father and son out, rescuers prepared intravenous drips and cleared the surrounding rubble. Medical teams also remained ready to provide immediate treatment during the extraction.
A member of the French Civil Security said both survivors were extremely weak after spending four days trapped under the debris. The official said teams were working to rehydrate them and provide medication while the rescue process continued slowly.
The team involved in the rescue included members of the French Civil Security and American responders from the Fairfax County Urban Search and Rescue Team in Virginia.
The same group had also helped rescue a mother and her nine-month-old baby the previous day.
Search Continues as Time Runs Out
At least 33 people were rescued over the weekend, giving families some hope amid the devastation. However, tens of thousands remain missing, and fears are growing that time is running out.
Experts say the chances of finding people alive under earthquake rubble drop sharply after 72 hours. The father and sonโs rescue after four days is therefore being seen as a rare moment of survival.
Rescue workers are continuing to search through collapsed buildings in La Guaira and other affected areas. Teams are using cameras, listening devices, search dogs, and manual digging to detect signs of life.
The disaster has left entire communities shattered. Families are waiting outside damaged buildings, hoping for news of missing loved ones.
Despite exhaustion and dangerous conditions, international and local rescue teams are continuing their work. The latest rescue has renewed determination among workers as Venezuela faces one of its deadliest natural disasters in recent years.
