Construction has officially begun on three major underpasses along Peshawar Road in Rawalpindi, a move aimed at reducing chronic traffic congestion in one of the cityโs busiest corridors.
The new infrastructure projects will cost a combined Rs8.359 billion and are expected to significantly improve traffic flow for commuters travelling through the area.
The development follows the completion of the Kutchery Chowk project, which has now been renamed Marka-e-Haq Square.
Where Will the New Underpasses Be Built?
According to officials, the three underpasses will be constructed at the following locations:
- Qasim Market Chowk
- Qabristan Chowk
- Charing Cross Chowk
These intersections experience heavy traffic throughout the day. Therefore, authorities expect the new underpasses to reduce travel times and ease bottlenecks.
Project Cost Breakdown
Each underpass carries a separate budget allocation.
Qasim Market Chowk Underpass
The largest of the three projects will be built at Qasim Market Chowk. It is estimated to cost Rs3.091 billion.
Qabristan Chowk Underpass
The second underpass, planned at Qabristan Chowk, will cost approximately Rs2.679 billion.
Charing Cross Chowk Underpass
The underpass at Charing Cross Chowk is expected to cost Rs2.588 billion.
Together, the three projects will cost Rs8.359 billion.
Utility Relocation Already Near Completion
Officials said more than 80 percent of utility relocation work has already been completed.
This includes the shifting of electricity, gas, water and communication lines. In addition, temporary diversion routes are being prepared to keep traffic moving during construction.
Because much of the preliminary work is already done, authorities hope to complete all three underpasses within about three months.
Kutchery Chowk Project Paved the Way
The new projects were launched shortly after the completion of the Kutchery Chowk interchange.
The project, now known as Marka-e-Haq Square, was completed at a revised cost of nearly Rs19 billion.
Originally, the project was estimated to cost Rs13.334 billion. However, construction expenses increased during execution.
Despite the higher cost, the interchange has improved traffic movement in a critical part of Rawalpindi.
Another Flyover May Be Added
Sources said officials are also considering a new flyover at Ammar Shaheed Chowk.
The proposed project is estimated to cost Rs3.45 billion.
If approved, the flyover would further strengthen Rawalpindiโs expanding road infrastructure.
Major Relief for Daily Commuters
Peshawar Road serves as one of Rawalpindiโs most important traffic arteries.
Thousands of vehicles use this route every day. As a result, congestion at major intersections often causes long delays.
The new underpasses are expected to provide much-needed relief to motorists and improve connectivity across the city.
With construction now underway, residents can expect smoother and faster travel in the coming months.
