Wang Yi Meets Iranian Security Official in New Delhi
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Iranian Deputy Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ghadir Nezami on Monday on the sidelines of the BRICS meeting in New Delhi.
The meeting came after the first round of Iran-US technical talks concluded in Switzerland under the mediation of Pakistan and Qatar.
According to the Iranian Embassy in India, both sides discussed regional developments, bilateral cooperation and the implementation of the recent peace agreement.
The talks also focused on the future of the Iran-US roadmap and efforts to maintain stability in the Middle East.
China Supports Implementation of Peace Agreement
Wang Yi said the agreementโs 14 points reflect the spirit of equality and are in line with the purposes of the United Nations Charter.
He said the implementation of the memorandum of understanding could help consolidate the hard-won ceasefire.
Wang added that the agreement could open new prospects for Iran-US relations and contribute to restoring peace in the Middle East.
The Chinese foreign minister said Beijing supports all efforts that promote peace.
He also reaffirmed Chinaโs support for Iran in safeguarding its sovereignty, security and national dignity.
Wang said China is ready to continue playing a constructive role in helping restore regional peace and stability.
Swiss Talks Produce Roadmap for Final Deal
The first round of quadrilateral talks involving Iran, the United States, Pakistan and Qatar concluded in Switzerland on Monday.
The talks marked the first formal follow-up engagement since the electronic signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
According to mediators Pakistan and Qatar, the United States and Iran agreed on a roadmap toward a final deal within 60 days.
The two sides also agreed on a mechanism to end fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
A communication line will be established to help ensure safe passage for commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
Technical talks will continue during the week at the Swiss mountain resort of Buergenstock.
A Pakistan and Qatar-facilitated de-confliction cell involving Lebanon will also oversee compliance with commitments related to ending military operations.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the successful conclusion of the first high-level committee meeting.
He said the talks were held in a positive and constructive atmosphere and produced encouraging progress.
