Prime Minister Mark Carney and Quebec officials condemn attack as investigation continues into motive and security concerns
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was โhorrifiedโ by a deadly shooting in Montrealโs Cรดte-des-Neiges district on Monday, where at least two people, including a police officer, were killed in a heavily Jewish neighbourhood.
In a post on X, Carney expressed solidarity with the victims, their families, first responders and the wider community affected by the attack. Quebec Premier Christine Frรฉchette also condemned the shooting, saying she was โdeeply shakenโ by the incident and stressing that such violence has no place in Canadian society.
Frรฉchette said the Quebec government would fully cooperate with authorities investigating the attack and would remain engaged in supporting victims, their loved ones and the broader community. She also thanked police officers, emergency responders and all personnel working at the scene.
Quebec orders support measures as investigation moves forward
Later on Monday, Frรฉchette announced that Quebecโs provincial flag would be flown at half-mast in the aftermath of the shooting. She also said the government would dispatch psychological support teams to assist anyone affected by the attack who needs help.
Authorities have not yet confirmed a motive for the shooting, and the investigation remains ongoing. Officials have not publicly stated whether the attack specifically targeted the Jewish community, although the location has raised concerns given the areaโs demographic makeup and the broader security climate.
Israeli officials warn over antisemitic violence in Canada
Israelโs Minister of Diaspora Affairs, Amichai Chikli, said his ministry was closely monitoring the situation and remained in contact with community leaders and local authorities in Montreal. He said the ministry stood ready to assist and support the Jewish community during what he described as a difficult time.
Although Canadian authorities have not established a motive, Chikli linked the incident to a wider rise in antisemitic violence in Canada over the past two years. He urged local authorities to move beyond condemnations and take stronger action to protect Jewish communities.
Israelโs consulate in Montreal also issued a statement expressing condolences to the victims and their families while thanking Montreal police and other law enforcement agencies for their swift response to the shooting.
