The federal government proposed billions of rupees for Parliament’s salaries, allowances and operational expenses in Budget 2026-27. The proposed allocations cover both houses of Parliament and their related offices.
According to budget documents, the funds will support parliamentary affairs and legislative operations. However, Parliament must still approve the proposed allocations through the budget process.
Senate Receives Over Rs 9 Billion
The government proposed Rs 9.67 billion for the Senate in the upcoming fiscal year. Additionally, Rs 1.22 billion has been allocated for senators’ salaries, allowances and privileges.
The budget also earmarks Rs 218.9 million for the Chairman Senate, Deputy Chairman and Senate Secretariat. Meanwhile, the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate and the secretariat will receive Rs 104.8 million.
Furthermore, the government proposed Rs 1.58 billion for chairpersons of Senate standing committees. These allocations aim to support parliamentary responsibilities and committee operations.
National Assembly Gets Higher Allocation
The budget proposes Rs 17.46 billion for the National Assembly during the 2026-27 fiscal year. Of this amount, Rs 5.35 billion has been allocated for members’ salaries and privileges.
Moreover, the Speaker, Deputy Speaker and their offices will receive Rs 393.4 million. The Leader of the Opposition and the related secretariat have been allocated Rs 83.4 million.
In addition, the government proposed Rs 1.6891 billion for chairpersons of National Assembly standing committees. These funds will cover committee-related functions and administrative expenses.
According to the budget proposals, these allocations form part of the government’s financial plan for Parliament. Nevertheless, lawmakers must debate and approve the proposed spending before it becomes effective.
