Thousands of protesters regrouped across Azad Jammu and Kashmir after authorities claimed overnight sit-ins had ended. Moreover, supporters of the proscribed Joint Awami Action Committee returned to protest sites on Friday afternoon. The renewed gatherings challenged official claims that the campaign had collapsed.
Protesters Return to Sit-in Sites
Authorities earlier stated protesters had vacated three camps outside Rawalakot after midnight. Officials claimed participants had dispersed following fears of a major law enforcement operation. Poonch Divisional Commissioner Sardar Waheed Khan said protesters surrendered without conditions and returned home.ย
Furthermore, he said local intermediaries persuaded JAAC leader Umar Nazir Kashmiri to end the demonstrations. According to officials, Kashmiri requested the withdrawal of JAAC’s proscription before ending the sit-ins. Residents also confirmed Eidgah Ground appeared deserted during the early morning hours.
However, protesters gradually returned to Eidgah Ground before noon. After Friday prayers, attendance reached nearly 6,000 people, including women and children. By evening, the crowd had expanded significantly.ย
Meanwhile, around 3,000 protesters also regrouped at the Thorar bus terminal. JAAC leader Sardar Arbab Advocate led the gathering and announced the sit-in would continue.
Shutdown Continues Across AJK
Officials said JAAC members debated their next strategy during the renewed demonstrations. Options reportedly included marching toward Rawalakot, heading to Muzaffarabad, or maintaining the current sit-in. Addressing supporters, Kashmiri insisted the planned long march remained unchanged.ย
Meanwhile, the shutdown strike entered its fifth consecutive day across most AJK districts. Markets largely remained closed, although some businesses briefly reopened during the evening. Public transport also stayed suspended across several regions.ย
Additionally, authorities reportedly blocked identity cards and passports of 31 JAAC leaders. Reports also suggested several individuals faced detention over alleged financial support for JAAC.
