LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday saw off the first batch of skilled workers travelling to Saudi Arabia under the provincial governmentโs Parwaaz Card programme. The batch includes 135 workers selected for overseas employment.
Addressing a ceremony, she described the departing youth as ambassadors of Pakistan and urged them to project a positive image abroad. According to the chief minister, overseas employment carries national responsibility along with economic opportunity.
Moreover, Maryam Nawaz said the young people leaving the country would represent Pakistanโs values, discipline, and work ethic. She added that empowering youth through skills-based education remains a key priority of her administration.
To support this goal, the Punjab government is investing heavily in quality vocational training. As a result, young workers are being equipped with skills demanded in international labour markets. In addition, she said skilled workers help strengthen Pakistanโs global reputation.
Furthermore, the chief minister described skilled labour as a valuable national asset. She noted that overseas employment improves household incomes while contributing to broader economic development. At the same time, foreign jobs provide better salaries, exposure, and professional experience.
However, Maryam Nawaz pointed out that more than half of Pakistanis working abroad remain unskilled. Consequently, many face limited wages, slower career growth, and weaker professional recognition. In contrast, skilled workers often receive higher pay and greater respect overseas.
Meanwhile, she said the government is offering training in trades preferred by young people. She also announced plans to expand vocational opportunities beyond Punjab wherever support is needed.
The first batch includes 105 workers selected for hospitality jobs, mainly in quick service restaurants. Additionally, 30 workers have secured employment in the construction sector. Their departure for Saudi Arabia will begin on June 28.
