An 88-year-old retired art teacher sold a thrift store painting for $254,000, nearly Rs. 7 crore. She unknowingly owned the valuable artwork for almost six decades. Moreover, Google Gemini helped identify the paintingโs true worth before its sale.
According to the New York Times, Helene Plotkin bought the painting in 1966. She purchased it from a thrift store in White Plains, New York, for under $100. The artwork remained on her wall for nearly 60 years.
Google Gemini Helped Identify the Artwork
Last December, Plotkinโs son Barry decided to investigate the paintingโs market value. He photographed the artwork and uploaded the image to Google Gemini. Additionally, he asked the AI chatbot to identify the painting and its possible artist.
Gemini analyzed the paintingโs bold brushstrokes and distinctive orange accents. It linked the artwork to Scottish Colourist F.C.B. Cadell from the 1920s. Furthermore, the chatbot recommended professional appraisers for further examination.
Experts Confirm Artist Before Successful Auction Sale
Specialists at auction house Lyon & Turnbull later authenticated the painting as an original F.C.B. Cadell work. Although Gemini incorrectly identified the paintingโs subject, it correctly recognized the artist. Consequently, experts confirmed the artworkโs authenticity before the auction.
The painting eventually sold for $254,000 after expert verification. The remarkable discovery transformed a decades-old thrift store purchase into a valuable masterpiece. Meanwhile, Plotkin made one heartfelt request to the buyer after the sale.
She asked the new owner to display the painting publicly one day. Therefore, her grandchildren could also appreciate the artworkโs beauty and historical significance. The story highlights how artificial intelligence can support expert research and uncover hidden treasures.
