Karachi residents continued to endure extreme weather conditions on Wednesday as the city’s feels-like temperature climbed to a scorching 49°C. Although the actual temperature stood at 37°C by 1pm, high humidity levels made conditions significantly more uncomfortable.
The ongoing heatwave has affected several parts of Pakistan, with meteorologists warning that elevated temperatures are likely to continue until June 12.
Humidity Pushes Perceived Temperature Higher
According to weather data, Karachi recorded a relative humidity level of 56 percent during the afternoon. At the same time, southwest winds were blowing at a speed of 26 kilometres per hour.
While the mercury remained below 40°C, humidity dramatically increased the heat index. As a result, residents experienced conditions that felt much hotter than the actual temperature.
A day earlier, the city recorded a feels-like temperature of 48°C, highlighting the continued intensity of the ongoing heatwave.
Heatwave Expected to Continue Until June 12
Weather experts have warned that the current heatwave is being driven by a high-pressure system affecting large parts of the country.
Under its influence, temperatures are expected to remain several degrees above normal. Forecasts suggest that many areas could experience temperatures up to seven degrees Celsius higher than seasonal averages.
For Karachi, maximum daytime temperatures are expected to remain between 40°C and 43°C from June 8 to June 12. In addition, night-time temperatures are also likely to stay unusually high, providing little relief for residents.
Authorities Issue Safety Advisory
Health experts and weather officials have urged people to take precautionary measures during the heatwave period. Children, women, and senior citizens have been identified as the most vulnerable groups and have been advised to exercise extra caution.
Residents have also been encouraged to avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight, particularly between 10am and 4pm when temperatures are at their highest.
Moreover, people are being advised to stay hydrated throughout the day and reduce outdoor activities whenever possible.
Farmers Asked to Remain Vigilant
The extreme weather is not only affecting urban populations but also raising concerns for the agricultural sector.
Farmers have been advised to plan crop-related activities according to prevailing weather conditions. They have also been urged to ensure proper care and hydration for livestock during the heatwave.
These precautionary measures are considered essential as prolonged exposure to high temperatures can negatively affect both crops and animals.
Rising Temperatures Highlight Summer Challenges
The latest weather conditions underscore the challenges posed by intense summer heat across Pakistan. With humidity amplifying discomfort and temperatures remaining well above normal, authorities continue to stress the importance of public awareness and safety measures.
As the heatwave persists, residents are being encouraged to remain cautious, stay hydrated, and limit exposure to harsh weather conditions until temperatures begin to ease later this week.
