WhatsApp will introduce usernames, allowing users to connect without sharing phone numbers. Consequently, the update aims to strengthen privacy across the messaging platform.
Meta announced the new feature on Monday. The company said it will gradually roll out username reservations worldwide over the coming months.
Users will receive notifications when the feature becomes available in their countries.
Usernames Will Replace Phone Number Sharing
Users will choose unique usernames to share with others. Therefore, they will no longer need to reveal phone numbers in many conversations.
The change will benefit users joining large group chats. Additionally, it will improve privacy when contacting businesses or new people.
Meta said users must know an exact username before sending a message. Furthermore, WhatsApp will not include a searchable username directory.
The company explained this approach adds another layer of privacy for users.
Gradual Global Rollout Planned
Meta said more than three billion people currently use WhatsApp worldwide. As a result, some users may not secure their preferred usernames.
Meanwhile, creators, small businesses, and organizations will receive additional support. They can reserve usernames already used on Facebook or Instagram.
The company expects the global rollout to continue over the coming months. Users will see in-app notifications once username reservations become available.
