LUCKNOW: A powerful storm with strong winds, rain, and hail tore through Uttar Pradesh, killing more than 100 people and injuring dozens. Rescue officials reported widespread destruction across the state as Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered immediate relief measures.
Devastation hits multiple districts
The violent weather struck on Wednesday and affected around a dozen districts. Prayagraj and surrounding areas suffered the heaviest losses. Authorities confirmed at least 104 deaths, while the storm injured 59 people and damaged 87 homes. It also killed 114 livestock and uprooted trees and billboards that fell onto vehicles and roadside stalls.
Moreover, eyewitnesses described terrifying scenes as darkness engulfed the area for nearly half an hour. In the coal-rich town of Obra in Sonbhadra district, strong winds lifted hoardings, signboards, and thick coal dust, hurling them through the air. Television footage showed dramatic moments, including a man lifted into the air after winds ripped him from a tin shelter in Bareilly. He survived with injuries.
CM orders swift relief
Falling trees and collapsing walls claimed several lives during the chaos. Storms frequently hit the region during the hot pre-monsoon months, but this one caused unusually severe damage. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed officials to reach survivors quickly and distribute financial aid within 24 hours. Rescue teams continue to assess the full extent of destruction and provide support to affected families.
Residents in the hardest-hit zones now face the difficult task of rebuilding their lives. Local authorities work round the clock to clear debris and restore normalcy. This tragic event serves as a reminder of natureโs power and the urgent need for better preparedness in vulnerable regions. Many hope for swift government assistance to help communities recover from the loss and destruction.
