RIYADH/BAGHDAD: Saudi fighter jets reportedly carried out airstrikes against Iran-linked militia targets inside Iraq during the recent regional conflict involving Iran, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.
Sources claimed the strikes targeted militia positions near Saudi Arabiaโs northern border after repeated drone and missile attacks allegedly launched toward Gulf states. Reports further stated that retaliatory rocket attacks were also launched from Kuwait into southern Iraq during the conflict.
According to security officials, one set of attacks struck facilities allegedly used by the Iran-backed militia Kataib Hezbollah for drone operations and communications. The strikes reportedly killed several fighters and damaged operational infrastructure.
Meanwhile, officials could not confirm whether Kuwaiti forces or the US military carried out the rocket attacks from Kuwaiti territory. The US military declined public comment regarding the allegations.
Regional Conflict Expanded Beyond Iran
The reported operations formed part of a broader regional military response following US-Israeli strikes on Iran earlier this year. Sources stated that Gulf countries became increasingly frustrated after repeated cross-border drone and missile attacks allegedly originated from Iraq.
Furthermore, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait reportedly issued diplomatic warnings to Baghdad before military action escalated. Both countries also summoned Iraqi diplomats during the conflict to protest attacks targeting Gulf territory and facilities.
Reports indicated that militia-linked social media channels repeatedly claimed responsibility for attacks on Saudi and Kuwaiti targets throughout the conflict period.
Tensions Highlight Fragile Regional Stability
Relations between Gulf states and Iraq have remained sensitive for decades, particularly after the rise of Iran-backed armed groups following the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq.
Although the 2023 China-brokered rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Iran improved diplomatic ties, the recent conflict has renewed regional security concerns.
Security officials also claimed Iran-backed militias continue surveillance drone operations near Gulf borders, raising fears of further escalation despite recent ceasefire efforts.
