ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has stopped accepting new maternity cases after the hospital exceeded its available capacity.
PIMS Executive Director Rana Imran Sikandar confirmed the decision, saying the hospital could not continue admitting patients beyond the number it could safely accommodate. The decision follows the recent fire that severely damaged the hospital’s children’s nursery and reduced its capacity.
PIMS Nursery Loses 15 Beds in Fire
According to Sikandar, the fire completely destroyed 15 beds in the hospital’s nursery.
The nursery previously had a capacity of 50 beds. However, the damage has reduced the number of operational beds to 35.
The reduced capacity has placed additional pressure on the hospital’s ability to accommodate new patients. Consequently, PIMS has decided to stop accepting new maternity cases until it can safely manage the patient load.
The hospital administration has emphasized that patient safety remains a priority while it manages the impact of the fire.
Patients to Be Referred to Other Hospitals
PIMS will refer children and other patients to hospitals in Islamabad and Rawalpindi when necessary. The referral arrangement will help ensure that patients continue to receive medical care despite the reduced capacity at PIMS.
The hospital’s maternity services have faced additional pressure following the fire, while damage to the nursery has further limited the facility’s ability to accommodate patients.
PIMS will continue assessing its available capacity and may adjust its admission arrangements as affected facilities become operational again.
