The United States is preparing to deliver the first of at least six KC-46 midair refueling aircraft to Israel, marking a significant step in strengthening its long range operational capabilities, officials confirmed on Monday.
The aircraft recently completed its maiden test flight in the US and is expected to arrive in Israel within a month. Consequently, the delivery will expand Israelโs ability to conduct extended missions without relying heavily on external support.
Meanwhile, Israeli planners have long considered aerial refueling critical for potential operations targeting distant locations, including Iran and Yemen. Although the air force already possesses limited refueling capacity, the new aircraft will significantly enhance endurance and operational reach.
In addition, the KC-46, designated โGideon,โ will integrate Israeli systems and adapt to specific operational requirements. This will allow fighter jets such as F-35s, F-16s, and F-15s to remain airborne longer and carry out more complex missions.
Furthermore, the aircraft can carry approximately 207000 pounds of fuel and refuel multiple jets during a single mission. It can also fly up to 16 hours continuously, with extended duration possible through additional refueling.
Officials noted that while recent military developments have reduced immediate urgency, long term strategic considerations remain unchanged. Therefore, the acquisition supports broader defense modernization plans, including new aircraft purchases under a decade long budget program.
Beyond combat operations, the KC-46 offers additional capabilities, including troop transport and medical evacuation support. As a result, it serves both operational and humanitarian roles.
Ultimately, the delivery underscores efforts to strengthen military readiness and ensure greater autonomy in future security scenarios.
