Bipartisan group cites security concerns over Russian S-400 system and regional stability
A bipartisan group of US lawmakers has urged the Trump administration to reject any proposal to sell F-35 stealth fighter jets to Türkiye, arguing that Ankara’s continued operation of the Russian-made S-400 air defence system poses significant risks to American military technology.
In a letter addressed to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, the lawmakers warned that approving the sale could compromise US national security, weaken confidence among regional allies, and reward Türkiye despite longstanding concerns over its defence relationship with Russia.
The legislators argued that operating the S-400 alongside advanced US aircraft could expose sensitive military capabilities to Russian intelligence.
Lawmakers raise technology and alliance concerns
According to the letter, the S-400 system poses a direct threat to US military platforms, including the F-16 and F-35, because simultaneous operation could provide valuable intelligence on advanced American defence technology.
The lawmakers also cautioned that approving the sale would undermine Washington’s credibility with key partners in the Eastern Mediterranean. They said allies including Greece, Cyprus, and Israel have consistently supported US strategic interests and should not see those commitments weakened by the transfer of advanced fighter aircraft to Türkiye.
They further argued that such a decision could embolden Ankara and increase regional tensions.
Israeli officials voice additional criticism
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also raised concerns about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s statements regarding Israel. Netanyahu said Israel takes such remarks seriously and intends to discuss the issue with American officials.
Separately, Israeli lawmaker Amit Halevi called for the closure of the Turkish Consulate in Jerusalem, alleging that it supports Hamas activities. He claimed the mission had become a platform for promoting the group’s agenda and urged Israeli authorities to take action.
The Trump administration has not publicly responded to the lawmakers’ request. The proposed F-35 sale remains under scrutiny as Washington continues to assess its defence cooperation with Türkiye and broader security considerations involving NATO allies and regional partners.
