US President Donald Trump predicted that the war with Iran would end after the November midterm elections. The US mid-term polls are being held on November 3, 2026.
Trump said Iran was attempting to influence the vote but would eventually struggle to continue fighting under mounting US economic pressure.
“I think war is going to end after the election because they can’t hold out any longer,” Trump told reporters.
He made the remarks before travelling to Dallas for the Republican National Convention.
The conflict has entered its seventh month, with renewed fighting showing little indication of an immediate resolution.
Meanwhile, Iran said it attacked 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz after the United States sank five Iranian oil tankers.
The latest escalation pushed oil prices higher, with Brent crude futures rising above $100 per barrel for the first time since July.
Trump’s approval ratings have also fallen to record lows amid voter frustration over the war and the growing cost-of-living crisis.
The US midterm elections are scheduled for November 3 and traditionally serve as a major test of the president’s political standing.
Trump also predicted that oil prices would decline soon after the election if the war ends.
However, he acknowledged that diplomatic negotiations remain possible, although he said his administration was not currently pursuing that option.
Iran threatens sanctions on vessels
Meanwhile, Iranian media reported that Tehran would impose sanctions on enemy and commercial vessels entering a newly designated maritime zone without authorisation.
IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohibi said unauthorised vessels would face restrictions on maritime, insurance and support services.
He added that vessels would remain barred from receiving those services even after subsequently transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
Mohibi said Iran’s conflict with major global powers continued despite periods when direct fighting had stopped.
He claimed the conflict had caused strategic damage to the United States and affected its security and economic calculations.
Iran has demanded an end to the war, Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, an end to Yemen’s blockade and the release of $24 billion in frozen assets.
The IRGC previously said the restricted maritime zone would extend from Chabahar into parts of the Gulf of Oman and Arabian Sea.
The announcement followed reports that Iran planned to establish a restricted zone outside the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, Iran claimed it had struck two US Navy destroyers operating in the region.
However, US CENTCOM denied the claim, saying no US warship had been hit and that all attempted IRGC attacks had failed.
