Hollywood’s first AI Actor Tilly Norwood gave her first on-camera interview to the CNN’s Elizabeth Wagmeister. Tilly offered an unusual glimpse into artificial intelligence and acting.
In an interview with CNN’s Elizabeth Wagmeister, Norwood faced an audition-style challenge that required her to improvise after learning that her dog had died.
The AI actor responded that she would remain completely still while expressing a simulated digital sense of grief.
However, Wagmeister pointed out that Norwood cannot independently perform scenes and requires prompts to determine her actions.
The journalist said the AI actor struggled with the scene even after receiving initial instructions.
According to CNN, Particle 6, the company behind Norwood, spent hours working on the computer before producing a complete take.
The demonstration highlighted the gap between AI acting ambitions and the technology’s current capabilities.
Meanwhile, Norwood’s creator, Eline Van der Velden, said she hopes the AI character could eventually reach the popularity of major Hollywood stars.
Van der Velden compared her aspirations to performers such as Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman.
However, she stressed that Norwood was not created to replace human actors in traditional filmmaking.
She said the AI character should not replace actors, although Hollywood’s creative community may view the technology differently.
Generative AI has already sparked major concerns over employment, compensation and creative ownership across the entertainment industry.
In 2023, the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA staged historic strikes partly over concerns about artificial intelligence.
The strikes lasted nearly four months and highlighted growing tensions between Hollywood workers and emerging technologies.
Norwood has not appeared in a released film yet, but she is set to lead the upcoming comedy-drama Misaligned.
The film will reportedly use a hybrid production model involving traditional filmmakers and technical AI specialists.
Under this approach, directors, writers and editors will work alongside specialists developing and managing artificial intelligence technology.
Norwood’s future in Hollywood will therefore depend on how audiences and industry professionals respond to AI-generated performances.
