PTA clears operator for commercial rollout
Pakistan is moving closer to broader 5G adoption as the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has granted Ufone permission to begin commercial 5G operations. The regulator issued a formal commencement letter, fulfilling a key requirement before the official launch. Consequently, Ufone is expected to roll out its 5G services within the coming days.
Moreover, under regulatory procedures, telecom operators must first conduct network testing at selected sites after acquiring a 5G licence. PTA then inspects these sites to ensure compliance with technical and service standards. Once satisfied, the authority issues a commencement letter, allowing operators to proceed with commercial deployment.
Market expansion follows recent spectrum auction
Meanwhile, Pakistanโs 5G spectrum auction, held on March 10, 2026, marked a significant milestone. During the allocation phase, a total of 480 megahertz of spectrum was distributed among major operators. Jazz secured 190 megahertz, Ufone obtained 180 megahertz, and Zong acquired 110 megahertz.
Furthermore, PTA completed the assignment stage on March 14, paving the way for infrastructure planning and service rollout. Jazz and Zong moved quickly, receiving commencement letters the same day they obtained licences. Subsequently, both companies launched commercial 5G services on March 19.
Reports indicated that Jazz initially deployed around 180 sites across major cities, while Zong introduced services in over 16 urban centres. As a result, Ufoneโs entry is expected to further expand Pakistanโs 5G landscape and enhance connectivity nationwide.
