Organizers Plan Expanded Maritime Campaign
ISTANBUL: Senior Turkish pro-Palestinian activists have announced preparations for a new Global Sumud Flotilla mission aimed at reaching the Gaza Strip and challenging Israelโs naval blockade.
Speaking at the Turkish branchโs โCouncil of Ideasโ gathering in Istanbul, Behesti Ismail Songur, president of the Mavi Marmara Freedom and Solidarity Association and a member of the Global Sumud Flotilla leadership, said organizers had begun planning a larger operation expected to launch in the coming months.
According to Songur, the upcoming mission will feature more vessels and broader international participation than previous flotillas organized earlier this year. The event drew supporters carrying Palestinian flags and wearing traditional keffiyehs, while Turkish media outlets and political figures also attended.
โThe Global Sumud Flotilla is preparing a new mission toward Gaza to challenge the blockade and highlight the humanitarian situation in the territory,โ Songur told participants.
Previous Missions Ended With Interceptions
The announcement follows the interception of several flotilla missions by Israeli naval forces during the spring of 2026. Israeli authorities stopped dozens of vessels carrying hundreds of activists before they could reach Gaza.
Most participants were transferred to Israel, detained briefly, and later deported. Despite the outcome, organizers described the campaign as successful in drawing international attention to conditions in Gaza and pledged to continue similar efforts.
Several Turkish organizations, including IHH and the Mavi Marmara Freedom and Solidarity Association, remain actively involved in the initiative.
Israel Expected to Monitor New Plans
Israeli officials have consistently opposed flotilla missions, describing them as political provocations designed to challenge what Israel considers a lawful security blockade.
Consequently, Israeli defense and diplomatic authorities are expected to closely monitor preparations for the new maritime campaign and respond as necessary.
Meanwhile, Global Sumud and human rights organizations continue to call for the release of 10 international activists detained in eastern Libya after participating in a related land convoy that sought to coordinate with previous Gaza-bound initiatives.
Organizers say they remain committed to expanding international participation and maintaining pressure for humanitarian access to Gaza through future campaigns.
