An Indonesian passenger ship carrying 243 people has gone missing in the Java Sea after authorities lost contact with the vessel.
The ship was travelling from Surabaya on Java Island toward Banjarmasin, the capital of South Kalimantan province on Borneo. However, communication with the vessel was lost during the journey.
Authorities have since launched a search and rescue operation to locate the ship. They are also working to account for everyone who was aboard.
103 Passengers Rescued, One Death Confirmed
Authorities said 103 people aboard the ship have been rescued so far. Meanwhile, one death has been confirmed following the incident.
However, the fate of the remaining passengers and crew remains unclear. Search teams are continuing efforts to locate those still unaccounted for.
Indonesia’s Search and Rescue Office said the vessel’s last known position was in the Java Sea. The location was approximately 148 kilometres from a port in Banjarmasin.
The distance has added urgency to the ongoing operation as authorities work to find the missing vessel and those still aboard.
Ship Reported Bad Weather Before Contact Was Lost
The vessel had reportedly encountered bad weather during its last communication with Indonesian officials. Soon afterward, authorities lost contact with the ship.
The incident has prompted an emergency search across the Java Sea. Rescue teams are now focused on determining the vessel’s location and reaching anyone who may still need assistance.
Meanwhile, authorities continue to account for the passengers and crew following the rescue of 103 people.
