The federal government has proposed monthly fuel assistance for motorcycle owners as petrol prices continue to put pressure on household budgets.
Under the proposed scheme, motorcyclists could receive Rs 2,000 each month for petrol and diesel. However, the government does not plan to reduce the petroleum levy.
At current fuel prices, the proposed amount would cover roughly five litres of petrol. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the relief scheme for an initial three-month period.
Rs 2,000 Monthly Petrol Relief Proposed
The government is now working on a mechanism to distribute the monthly assistance to eligible motorcycle owners. However, continuation beyond three months will depend on available funds.
The future of the scheme will also depend on developments surrounding the Gulf War. Meanwhile, authorities are focusing on targeted assistance rather than a broad reduction in fuel prices.
The proposal comes as rising petrol costs continue to affect consumers. For many motorcycle owners, fuel expenses represent a regular part of their monthly household spending.
However, the proposed Rs 2,000 support would provide only limited relief. It would help cover part of the fuel bill without lowering the actual price paid at petrol stations.
Govt Keeps Petroleum Levy Unchanged
The government has maintained its position against reducing the petroleum levy. The Finance Ministry has resisted proposals seeking a reduction in the levy.
Instead, authorities have opted for targeted cash assistance for a specific group of consumers. Therefore, the proposed scheme would not provide the same relief to all fuel users.
Petroleum levy collections have also increased significantly. Revenue from the levy reached Rs. 1.567 trillion during the previous fiscal year.
The latest proposal consequently focuses on directing assistance toward motorcycle owners. At the same time, it leaves the existing petroleum levy structure unchanged.
Rising Fuel Prices Drive Relief Plan
The government has linked the recent increase in fuel prices to international oil market conditions. It has also cited the ongoing US-Israel war on Iran.
Global crude prices have remained elevated, while domestic fuel prices have continued to rise. As a result, the government has faced growing pressure to provide relief to consumers.
The proposed monthly payment could offer some assistance to motorcycle owners during the initial three-month period. However, it would not address the underlying increase in petrol prices.
For now, authorities are developing the distribution mechanism. The scheme’s longer-term continuation will depend on available funds and developments affecting global oil markets.
