US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Washington and Tehran had made progress in recent discussions, expressing confidence that both sides could reach an agreement within days. However, US officials confirmed that negotiations remain incomplete as the White House awaits Iran’s formal response to a proposed framework agreement.
According to US officials, the proposed one-page memorandum of understanding outlines steps aimed at ending tensions and creating a path for broader nuclear negotiations. Sources stated that Washington expects Tehran to respond within the next 24 to 48 hours.
Meanwhile, Trump maintained an optimistic tone while addressing reporters at the White House. He stated that Iranian officials appeared willing to negotiate and suggested a deal remained possible despite ongoing disagreements.
US proposal includes sanctions relief and nuclear restrictions
Officials involved in the negotiations said Trump’s envoys, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, have continued discussions with Iranian representatives through direct and mediated channels.
The proposed agreement reportedly includes a temporary suspension of Iran’s nuclear enrichment activities. In return, the United States would consider easing sanctions and releasing billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets. Additionally, both sides may ease restrictions linked to transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
However, Iranian officials confirmed they are still reviewing the proposal and have not yet delivered a final response through Pakistani mediators. Sources added that communication delays continue because messages must reach Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, who remains in hiding for security reasons.
Israel monitors negotiations as regional tensions continue
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also discussed the negotiations with Trump and senior US officials on Wednesday. Netanyahu stressed that Israel and the United States remain fully coordinated regarding Iran’s nuclear programme.
At the same time, Israeli forces conducted an air strike in Beirut targeting senior Hezbollah commanders. Analysts said the development could influence ongoing negotiations, although officials have not confirmed any immediate impact.
