Washington: US President Donald Trump has instructed his aides to prepare for a prolonged blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, according to a Wall Street Journal report published Tuesday. The move signals a continued focus on economic pressure against Iran rather than immediate escalation or a full return to war.
During a Monday meeting, Trump reportedly weighed options between restarting military conflict and maintaining current pressure tactics. Ultimately, he favoured extending the blockade strategy, which officials said he viewed as a lower-risk approach compared to renewed fighting or ending ceasefire negotiations.
Moreover, Trump reiterated his stance during a state dinner with Britainโs King Charles, stating that US forces were performing well in the Middle East. He also claimed that military action had weakened Iran and suggested that allies supported Washingtonโs position on preventing Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.
Meanwhile, regional tensions remain high. Reports indicate that Iran has restricted most shipping through the Strait of Hormuz since late February, while US measures have targeted Iranian maritime activity. Consequently, global energy flows continue to face disruption risks.
In addition, diplomatic efforts have stalled. Iranian officials reportedly proposed staged negotiations that would delay nuclear discussions until after a ceasefire and shipping disputes are resolved. However, Washington insists that nuclear issues must be addressed at the outset.
Furthermore, Iranian proposals delivered through diplomatic channels in Islamabad reportedly aim to secure guarantees against renewed conflict while seeking control over maritime access.
As a result, both sides remain locked in disagreement, with no breakthrough in sight despite ongoing mediation attempts.
