US President Donald Trump delayed the confirmation of his intelligence chief nominee during an ongoing legislative standoff. He said acting Director of National Intelligence Bill Pulte would continue leading the agency for now.
Trump announced the decision through a Truth Social post on Wednesday. He also urged lawmakers to approve surveillance legislation and stricter voter identification requirements.
The president instructed nominee Jay Clayton not to attend his scheduled Senate confirmation hearing. Consequently, the hearing was postponed until further notice.
Trump Explains Confirmation Delay
Trump said he wanted Clayton to remain US attorney for the Southern District of New York. He explained that Clayton should stay until officials confirm his replacement.
Additionally, Trump linked the nomination delay to congressional negotiations. He encouraged Democrats to support the proposed surveillance measure and voter identification legislation.
Meanwhile, Bill Pulte will continue serving as acting director of national intelligence. Trump confirmed Pulte would remain in the position during the confirmation delay.
Lawmakers Raise Concerns Over Acting Chief
Last week’s nomination of Jay Clayton received support from several lawmakers, including prominent Republicans. Many welcomed the decision after expressing concerns about Bill Pulte’s limited experience.
Pulte previously served as a housing official and close Trump ally. However, he has never held military or intelligence leadership positions. The director oversees the United States’ 18 intelligence agencies.
In contrast, Clayton currently serves as US attorney for the Southern District of New York. His position ranks among the Justice Department’s most respected federal prosecutorial roles.
The vacancy emerged after former intelligence chief Tulsi Gabbard resigned in May. She cited her husband’s cancer treatment as the reason for stepping down.
