Three sons of Iranโs slain Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, attended funeral prayers on Sunday within a crowded Tehran complex. Mostafa, Meysam, and Masoud Khamenei stood directly beside the coffins during the large public ceremony. However, the new leader Mojtaba Khamenei skipped the public event entirely.
State television showed the grieving brothers praying behind the coffins at the Grand Mosalla. Meanwhile, thousands of emotional mourners gathered across the sprawling religious complex to pay their respects. This event launches a week of mass commemorations across the country.
Public Display Under Glass
Authorities placed the leader’s coffin under glass alongside four deceased family members on Saturday. Previously, senior officials and foreign dignitaries attended a private lying-in-state ceremony. Officials will soon transport the remains to holy sites across Iran and Iraq.
Successor Remains Out Of Sight
Mojtaba Khamenei has not appeared in public since the deadly February airstrikes. Consequently, rumors continue to swirl regarding his health and current physical condition. Sources close to his circle report that he suffered severe injuries during that attack.
High-ranking officials including President Masoud Pezeshkian attended Sunday’s service to show solidarity. During the prayers, state media captured Masoud Khamenei wiping tears with a traditional keffiyeh. Mourners continued to beat their chests and fill the area throughout the night.
The metro operator recorded millions of passenger trips as people traveled into central Tehran. On Monday, a massive procession will march through the capital city before moving to Qom. Eventually, workers will bury the former leader near the holy Mashhad shrine.
Finally, a recent Washington-brokered ceasefire ended the intense four-month war. Officials claim this truce will bring significant economic benefits to the nation.
