Residents Rush to Prepare as Powerful Storm Nears
People in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands are preparing for Super Typhoon Bavi as the dangerous storm moves closer to the US Pacific territories.
Authorities said the typhoon was moving westward on Saturday with sustained winds of 269 kilometres per hour. Gusts were reaching up to 324 kilometres per hour.
The storm is carrying winds equal to a Category 5 hurricane. Weather officials warned that conditions could worsen before landfall.
The eye of the typhoon is expected to pass very close to Rota on Monday. Rota is a small island located between Guam and Saipan, the main island of the Northern Mariana Islands.
Forecasters said the storm could strengthen further, with winds possibly reaching 278 kilometres per hour.
Both Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands have declared a state of emergency.
Emergency Shelters to Open as Guam Raises Alert Level
Guam was set to enter Condition of Readiness 2 from 10pm. This means a typhoon is expected within 24 hours.
Emergency shelters are scheduled to open on Sunday morning.
The governorโs office has asked residents going to shelters to bring enough food and water for seven days. Families have also been advised to carry medicines, bedding, and other essential supplies.
Pets will not be allowed inside the shelters.
Residents across the islands have rushed to gas stations, supermarkets, and hardware stores. Many people are buying plywood to cover windows. Others are stocking up on water, batteries, candles, canned food, and fuel.
Plans for public celebrations were quickly overshadowed by storm preparations. Saturday also marked the United Statesโ 250th anniversary and Liberation Day for Saipan.
Local residents said fear remains high because of past typhoons. Some families said they were leaving their homes for hotels or safer buildings.
Memories of Earlier Typhoon Damage Raise Concern
The region is still recovering from a previous super typhoon that hit in April.
That storm caused major damage across the islands. It knocked out power for tens of thousands of people, uprooted trees, overturned vehicles, and tore metal roofs from buildings.
A cargo ship also overturned after suffering engine failure. One crew memberโs body was recovered, while five others were reported missing and presumed dead.
The American Red Cross said some residents are still living in temporary shelters. Disaster response teams have now been deployed ahead of Baviโs arrival.
Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands are home to around 210,000 people. The region also holds major historical importance because of World War II battles fought there.
Officials are urging residents to remain alert and complete preparations quickly.
Community leaders say safety, discipline, and early planning are essential as Super Typhoon Bavi approaches.
For many families, the biggest concern is the possibility of another long period without electricity, water, and basic services.
