Researchers Point to Shared Traits Between Domestic and Wild Felines
Scientific findings continue to reveal how closely domestic cats remain connected to their wild relatives, with researchers reporting that house cats share approximately 95.6% of their DNA with Siberian tigers.
The genetic overlap highlights the evolutionary relationship between modern household pets and some of the worldโs most powerful predators. Although domestication changed the lifestyle and behaviour of cats over thousands of years, experts say many of their core biological traits remain largely intact.
Researchers noted that domestic cats and large wild felines continue to share numerous characteristics, including hunting instincts, territorial behaviour, sharp sensory abilities, and agile movement patterns.
Consequently, many actions commonly observed in petsโsuch as stalking toys, pouncing unexpectedly, or closely tracking movementโreflect behaviours rooted in ancient survival mechanisms.
Despite dramatic differences in size and habitat, scientists explain that the genetic connection demonstrates how evolution preserved important traits across feline species.
Predatory Instincts Remain Strong Despite Domestication
Experts say domestication altered how cats interact with humans, but it did not eliminate their natural predatory tendencies. Instead, generations of selective adaptation allowed cats to live alongside people while retaining many instincts inherited from wild ancestors.
For example, domestic cats continue to possess highly developed hearing, night vision, rapid reflexes, and stealth capabilities that support hunting behaviour.
Additionally, researchers explain that cats maintain characteristics associated with apex predators, although they express these behaviours in smaller and less threatening environments.
The findings also help explain why household cats frequently display actions that resemble those of larger felines in the wild. Stretching, stalking, climbing, and sudden bursts of energy all mirror behavioural patterns seen among powerful predator species.
Therefore, while domestic cats may appear gentle and playful companions, scientific evidence suggests they still carry many characteristics of their larger relatives.
