Pet Owners Report Poorer Sleep Quality
A new scientific study has warned that sleeping with pets may affect sleep quality.
Researchers found that people who share their bed with pets are more likely to report poor sleep and insomnia symptoms.
The study was published in the journal Scientific Reports. It analysed data from 1,591 adults in the United States.
The research focused on the link between pet ownership, bed-sharing and sleep health.
According to the findings, nearly 47.6 percent of pet owners said they slept in the same bed as their pets.
Researchers said the connection remained even after considering factors such as age and income.
The findings suggest that pet co-sleeping may not be as restful as many owners believe.
While many people feel comforted by pets at night, the study shows that this habit may disturb sleep patterns.
Dogs Linked to More Night-Time Disturbance
The study found that sleep problems were mainly linked to dog owners.
Researchers said dogs may disturb sleep due to their size and movement during the night.
Dogs may also shift positions often. This can interrupt deep sleep and cause repeated awakenings.
Experts said dogs often adjust their routines according to their owners. This can increase movement and activity during sleeping hours.
People who slept with dogs were more likely to report symptoms linked to insomnia.
These symptoms included difficulty sleeping, interrupted rest and lower overall sleep quality.
The study did not find the same level of sleep disturbance among cat owners.
Researchers said cats are usually lighter and may take up less space in bed.
Cats are also less likely to follow human sleep schedules in the same way as dogs.
However, earlier studies have suggested that cat owners may sometimes report leg movement issues during sleep.
Health Benefits and Allergy Risks Remain Important
Experts said the findings do not mean pets are harmful overall.
Pet ownership can offer strong mental health benefits.
Studies from the National Institutes of Health have shown that interaction with pets may reduce stress.
It can also help lower blood pressure and support emotional bonding.
Pets may be especially helpful for people facing loneliness, anxiety or depression.
However, sleeping too closely with pets may create health concerns for some people.
Medical experts said pet hair and dander can trigger allergies.
The American Academy of Allergy and Asthma has reported that many people with allergies may face sleep disruption due to pets.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has also warned about some pet-related infections.
Experts advise pet owners to balance emotional comfort with sleep hygiene.
They suggest keeping pets nearby, but not always in the same bed, especially for people with insomnia or allergies.
