A seven-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed his nine-year-old sister after an argument while they were playing in Mouza Aasiyan, a suburban village in Chiniot, on Thursday. The tragic incident has raised fresh concerns about unsafe firearm storage in homes.
According to officials at Saddar Police Station, the boy, identified as Nauman, exchanged heated words with his elder sister, Maryam, during play. The situation escalated when he picked up a loaded pistol that had been kept inside the house. He then fired the weapon, fatally injuring his sister.
Maryam died at the scene before medical assistance could arrive. Soon afterward, police reached the house and shifted her body to the District Headquarters Hospital for the mandatory post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, the family described the shooting as a heartbreaking accident. The grieving parents said the incident was unintentional and refused to file a criminal complaint against their young son. As a result, they also declined to pursue formal legal proceedings.
Authorities are continuing the necessary legal formalities following the incident. However, the case has once again highlighted the dangers of leaving loaded firearms within the reach of children. Safety experts have repeatedly urged families to store weapons securely, unload firearms when not in use, and keep ammunition locked separately to prevent similar tragedies.
The incident serves as a reminder that proper firearm safety measures can help protect children and avoid devastating accidents at home.
