The Punjab government has launched a major crackdown on unregistered tuition centres and academies following the deadly Kahna roof collapse in Lahore.
As part of the operation, authorities have started sealing 760 tuition centres across Lahore. The action began on Friday after concerns over building safety and regulatory compliance.
The decision follows two recent incidents involving educational institutions. Consequently, the provincial government has introduced stricter safety measures for tuition centres operating across Punjab.
Punjab Begins Large-Scale Crackdown on Tuition Centres
Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar announced that the campaign would target unregistered tuition centres throughout the province.
While addressing reporters, he confirmed that enforcement had already started in Lahore.
“760 tuition centres in Lahore are being sealed from today,” he said.
The minister also announced that only registered tuition centres meeting safety standards would be allowed to continue operating.
“Most educational institutions in Punjab are not registered. Going forward, only those academies and tuition centres that possess valid fitness certificates will be allowed to operate.”
Accordingly, authorities will continue inspections before allowing any institution to reopen.
Kahna Roof Collapse Triggered Immediate Action
The crackdown comes after the tragic roof collapse at a private tuition centre in Lahore’s Kahna area earlier this week.
The incident claimed the lives of 14 children who had gathered for classes. In addition, several other students suffered injuries.
Only a day later, another roof collapse occurred at a school in Lahore’s Baghbanpura area. That incident resulted in the death of one child, while multiple students sustained injuries.
Following these back-to-back tragedies, the provincial government decided to tighten oversight of private educational institutions.
Registration Process Underway Across Lahore
Authorities began registering private tuition centres in Lahore on Thursday. Officials stated that the registration process is expected to be completed within three days. Meanwhile, inspection teams have started visiting academies across the city.
The inspections will determine whether institutions comply with government safety requirements before reopening. As a result, operators must complete registration and obtain the necessary approvals.
Safety Standards Will Decide Future Operations
According to the Education Department, future inspections will focus on several important safety measures.
These include structural stability, emergency exits, and the overall fitness of buildings.
Authorities believe these inspections will reduce the risk of similar accidents in the future.
Furthermore, officials intend to ensure that students study in safe learning environments.
The government has made it clear that compliance with safety regulations will become mandatory for every tuition centre.

During the announcement, Rana Sikandar said officials had discovered widespread violations during preliminary assessments.
According to him, many academies have been operating without official registration or mandatory safety approvals. Therefore, authorities have decided to strengthen monitoring and enforce existing regulations more strictly.
The latest campaign represents one of Punjab’s largest enforcement actions against unregistered tuition centres. Officials expect inspections to continue until every academy meets the required legal and safety standards.
