The Punjab government has reinstated smart lockdown measures across the province from Tuesday, ending the temporary relief it granted to traders ahead of Eid-ul-Azha. The decision comes as part of the government’s ongoing austerity and energy conservation campaign, according to reports.
As the exemption period officially ended on June 1, 2026 authorities directed markets, shops, restaurants, and other commercial establishments to resume compliance with previously announced operating hours. Consequently, businesses must now follow the earlier restrictions without exception.
Earlier Relief Period Comes to an End
The provincial government had relaxed smart lockdown restrictions on May 16 to facilitate commercial activity before Eid-ul-Azha. During this period, shops, markets, shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, and food outlets remained exempt from early closure timings across Punjab.
However, the temporary relaxation expired on June 1. Therefore, businesses must now return to the regulated schedule introduced under the provinceโs energy-saving initiative. Officials stated that the move aims to reduce energy consumption while supporting broader austerity measures.
Markets and Restaurants Resume Restricted Hoursย
Under the restored regulations, all markets, shops, and shopping malls must close by 8:00 pm throughout the week. In addition, hotels, restaurants, and food outlets must cease regular operations by 10:00 pm.
Nevertheless, authorities will continue to allow takeaway and home delivery services after the prescribed closing time. The government originally announced these restrictions in April as part of a wider strategy to conserve energy and manage public resources more efficiently.
Officials expect businesses to comply fully with the revised schedule as enforcement measures resume across the province.
