Authorities Warn of Extreme Weather Conditions
The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a province-wide heatwave alert for June 8 to June 12, warning that temperatures may rise significantly above seasonal averages across several districts.
According to the authority, temperatures in many parts of Punjab could remain 5 to 7 degrees Celsius higher than normal during the forecast period. Upper Punjab is expected to record temperatures between 41ยฐC and 44ยฐC, while mercury levels in South Punjab may climb to between 44ยฐC and 48ยฐC.
Officials also warned that major urban centers, including Lahore, could experience severe heat conditions over the coming days. In addition, unusually high nighttime temperatures are expected to persist, reducing relief from the daytime heat and increasing health risks for vulnerable populations.
Following the alert, Relief Commissioner Punjab Nabeel Javed directed all divisional commissioners and deputy commissioners to remain on high alert and implement precautionary measures in accordance with instructions issued by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
Citizens Urged to Take Precautions During Peak Hours
PDMA Director General Umar Javed said the province may also experience dust storms and strong winds during the heatwave period. Therefore, authorities have advised residents to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines to avoid heat-related illnesses.
The public has been urged to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when temperatures are expected to be at their highest. Furthermore, citizens have been encouraged to increase water intake and take preventive measures against dehydration and heatstroke.
Special advisories have been issued for children, elderly individuals, and women, who are considered more vulnerable to extreme temperatures. Health authorities have also been instructed to remain prepared for potential heat-related emergencies.
Meanwhile, farmers have been advised to adopt protective measures for crops and livestock to minimize the impact of the extreme weather. Rescue 1122 and other emergency services have been directed to maintain readiness for possible incidents related to heatstroke, water shortages, and weather-related emergencies.
Officials continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged residents to stay informed through official weather updates and emergency advisories.
