The Punjab government has announced financial assistance for families affected by the Kahna tragedy. Under the decision, Rs2 million will be provided to the family of each child who lost their life in the incident.
Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz directed the Deputy Commissioner of Lahore to ensure implementation of the compensation package. Authorities have also been instructed to complete the payment process for eligible families.
The announcement comes as efforts continue to support affected households and understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Injured Teacher Shares Details About Conditions Before Collapse
Meanwhile, Anila, the injured teacher who operated the tuition centre, has spoken publicly about the events before the roof collapse.
Speaking during treatment at Lahore General Hospital, she said repair work had started because rainwater had been leaking through the roof.
According to Anila, she never expected the roof to collapse. She also revealed that her daughter was among those injured during the incident.
The teacher explained that she had been conducting tuition classes from her home for the last two years because of financial hardship. She added that her husband earns income through a handcart near a local market.
Anila further clarified that her husband had not received a fruit cart from the Punjab chief minister. According to her, the tuition centre usually had between 30 and 35 enrolled children. However, she said nearly 20 children attended classes on the day before the incident.
Providing an update on her daughterโs condition, Anila said the child had recovered enough to leave the hospital.
At the same time, she explained that she had not yet been able to meet her daughter while receiving treatment herself.
Experts Point to Multiple Factors Behind the Collapse
Experts have identified several structural and physical factors that may explain the severity of the incident.
According to preliminary assessments, the children were seated inside a room measuring approximately 10 by 15 feet when the roof collapsed.
Specialists said the childrenโs position exposed them directly to the impact of falling debris. Reports indicated that the roof contained iron reinforcement, cement and layers of earth.
Experts explained that these materials collapsed together and created significant force. As a result, severe injuries were reported immediately after the collapse.
According to assessments, children have more fragile skull structures than adults. Experts believe this factor increased vulnerability to serious head trauma. Initial findings also suggested that seating position affected injury severity.
Children seated near the walls reportedly suffered comparatively less severe injuries. Meanwhile, those positioned under the central portion of the roof faced greater exposure.
Additional Weight Also Under Review
Investigators are also examining whether additional load contributed to the collapse. According to available assessments, three labourers and another individual were reportedly present on top of the structure.
Experts are reviewing whether this increased pressure on the roof before the incident.
Some specialists also suggested casualty levels may have been different if the children had been lying down instead of sitting upright.
According to the assessment, such positioning could potentially reduce concentrated impact on the head and upper body.
As investigations continue, authorities remain focused on determining all contributing factors behind the tragedy while support measures move forward for affected families.
