LAHORE โ Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif chaired a high-profile meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department. This session finalized a massive green transport initiative. The plan aims to counter rising fuel prices. Additionally, it will combat heavy urban pollution. The flagship component involves a massive transition toward electric vehicles. This strategy sets the stage for major environmental reforms across the province.
Relaunch of the Student E-Bike Scheme
Specifically, the chief minister approved the relaunch of the provincial e-bike program. Under this scheme, the government will distribute 100,000 electric bikes to students within a year. The Punjab government will provide a direct subsidy of Rs 70,000 on each unit. Therefore, male students only need to make an initial down payment of Rs 14,000. They will subsequently clear the remaining balance through easy, interest-free monthly installments of Rs 2,100.
Additional Financial Relief for Female Students
Furthermore, Maryam Nawaz announced special financial relief packages dedicated entirely to female applicants. Under these guidelines, the provincial administration will completely bear the upfront down payment. They will also cover the official registration fees for eligible female students. Consequently, female candidates will only pay the standard interest-free monthly installment of Rs 2,100. The provincial government has also extended this easy installment facility directly to its employees.
Eligibility Criteria and Selection Process
Meanwhile, authorities have structured strict eligibility rules. This framework ensures complete transparency across the selection process. To apply, candidates must be at least 18 years old. They must also be regularly enrolled in an HEC-recognized degree college or university within Punjab. Additionally, all applicants must hold a valid motorcycle learnerโs permit or a proper driving license. If total submissions exceed the designated quota, the government will conduct an electronic balloting process to select the final beneficiaries.
Infrastructure Expansion and Rental E-Bikes
In tandem with student distribution, the government plans to initiate a broader transport strategy simultaneously. For instance, the initial phase will deploy around 10,000 electric bikes for rental use across Lahore. This network will be supported by 300 dedicated docking and charging stations. Over the next five years, the overall fleet will grow to include 5,000 electric buses. As an immediate step, the transport department will introduce 1,500 new clean-energy buses across 91 tehsils. This expansion prioritizes major divisions like Rawalpindi, Multan, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala.
Local EV Manufacturing and Economic Impact
Ultimately, officials highlighted a historic economic milestone as Punjab successfully established its own domestic electric bus manufacturing industry. They attributed this rapid industrial breakthrough directly to the provincial government’s business-friendly regulations. By shifting towards local manufacturing, the province aims to reduce reliance on expensive fuel imports. Similarly, the setup will create new industrial jobs while providing sustainable grassroots relief to daily commuters.
