The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has launched a crackdown on the alleged illegal sale of telecom subscriber data. The operation resulted in the arrest of three suspects in Lahore.
According to the PTA, the regulator filed a complaint with the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency. The complaint targeted individuals allegedly operating an illegal network selling confidential telecom information.
The NCCIA carried out an enforcement operation following the complaint. Consequently, authorities arrested three suspects and seized multiple electronic devices and SIM cards.
Authorities Recover Devices and Subscriber Data
During the raid, officials recovered five mobile phones and eight Biometric Verification System devices. They also seized 43 suspicious SIM cards from the suspects.
According to the PTA, forensic analysis uncovered WhatsApp conversations linked to the alleged illegal operation. Investigators also found evidence of unauthorized sales of sensitive subscriber information.
The recovered material included Call Detail Records, subscriber and IMEI data, and location information. Furthermore, officials found fingerprint records, CNIC details, and evidence of financial transactions.
Authorities believe the evidence will help determine the scale of the alleged network. Investigators are continuing forensic examinations of the seized devices.
Investigation Continues After FIR Registration
Following the operation, authorities registered a First Information Report against the suspects. Investigators are now working to identify additional individuals connected to the alleged network.
The PTA reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the confidentiality of telecom subscriber information. It also pledged continued cooperation with law enforcement agencies against cyber-related crimes.
Officials said the regulator will maintain strict oversight to prevent the misuse of sensitive customer data. They added that protecting consumer privacy remains a top regulatory priority.
