ISLAMABAD:ย Former prime minister and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif will visit Gilgit-Baltistan on Tuesday to meet party ticket holders ahead of the June 7 general elections.
The Gilgit-Baltistan Election Commission has announced that the long-delayed elections in the region will take place on June 7, following a four-month postponement. The polls are seen as politically significant amid rising tensions between major political parties.
Punjab Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb said on Monday that the PML-N president would undertake a one-day visit to Gilgit-Baltistan. In a post on X, she said Nawaz Sharif would hold meetings with party leaders and ticket holders to review election preparations.
During the visit, Nawaz is expected to discuss the partyโs strategy for the upcoming elections and matters related to development and public welfare in the region. Although he has remained largely inactive in electoral politics since the February 2024 general elections, he continues to play an advisory role within the party.
Nawaz Sharif currently serves as the head of the Lahore Authority for Heritage Revival, where he oversees initiatives aimed at protecting the cityโs historical sites. He also acts as a political mentor to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
Earlier in April, Nawaz reiterated his commitment to prioritising development in Gilgit-Baltistan if the PML-N secures victory, calling the region as dear to him as the rest of Pakistan.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf alleged systematic pre-poll rigging and state-backed interference ahead of the elections. The party accused the ruling PML-N of violating the electoral code of conduct and criticised the Election Commissionโs role, raising concerns over transparency and fairness in the electoral process.
