Sharif Credits Military and Diplomatic Teams for Sustaining Talks
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday highlighted Pakistan’s role in facilitating negotiations between the United States and Iran, revealing that discussions came close to collapse several times before a breakthrough was achieved.
Addressing the National Assembly, the prime minister praised Field Marshal Asim Munir for maintaining momentum during the difficult mediation process. Sharif said the military chief remained actively engaged throughout the negotiations and played a critical role in preventing the talks from breaking down.
According to the prime minister, several moments threatened to derail the diplomatic effort, but continued engagement helped keep communication channels open. He described the agreement as a major achievement for peace and regional stability.
Sharif also acknowledged the contributions of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and members of Pakistan’s diplomatic team for their sustained efforts during the negotiations.
Regional Leaders and International Partners Praised
Furthermore, the prime minister thanked leaders of Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and China for supporting mediation efforts throughout the process.
He noted that cooperation among regional partners helped create conditions conducive to dialogue and confidence-building between Washington and Tehran.
Diplomatic sources described the negotiations as one of the most challenging mediation efforts in recent years, involving months of engagement, shuttle diplomacy and coordination among multiple stakeholders.
Pakistan’s role as a mediator gained international attention as discussions progressed despite repeated setbacks and periods of uncertainty.
Agreement Opens Path for Further Negotiations
Meanwhile, the reported understanding between the United States and Iran includes an immediate cessation of military operations and a framework for future negotiations.
According to publicly reported details, further discussions are expected to focus on broader political, economic and security issues during a proposed negotiation period.
The agreement also reportedly includes measures related to regional stability, maritime security and economic arrangements, although officials have indicated that additional details will emerge in the coming weeks.
Sharif told lawmakers that Pakistan’s efforts had earned international recognition and demonstrated the country’s ability to contribute constructively to global peace initiatives.
As diplomatic engagement continues, regional governments and international observers are closely monitoring the next phase of negotiations and the implementation of commitments made by both sides.
