ISLAMABAD : Official figures confirm that the total number of pending cases in the Federal Constitutional Court has reached 22,632, highlighting a growing backlog since the newly established judicial body began its operations.
The significant caseload stems primarily from a massive transfer in November 2025, when authorities shifted 21,886 pending cases from the Supreme Court directly to the newly formed Constitutional Court. Litigants have registered ,467 new cases since that initial transfer, while the court has successfully disposed of 5,052 cases.
Recent monthly performance metrics show fluctuating rates of efficiency. In February, citizens filed 681 new cases, while judges resolved 319 matters. March saw a narrower gap, with litigants submitting 420 cases and the court disposing of 397.
The caseload surged dramatically in April when the registry recorded 775 new cases, though judges managed to clear 747 files. May brought the court its strongest performance as legal teams cleared 839 cases against 662 new arrivals. However, the backlog widened again in June, with people filing 697 new cases while the court disposed of only 478.
Legal experts state that the incoming flow of litigation continues to outpace judicial resolutions, keeping the pressure high on the new institution. The court administration plans to introduce streamlined processing systems to address the remaining balance of cases over the next quarter. Officials emphasize that resolving the historical backlog remains a top priority for the judiciary.
