140-Acre Port Project Planned on KPT Land
Pakistan has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Saudi and local partners to explore the development of a major maritime business district in Karachi.
The proposed project will be built on a 140-acre Karachi Port Trust site located on MT Khan Road. The land is considered one of the most valuable waterfront locations in the city.
Federal Maritime Affairs Minister Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said the MoU was signed between Karachi Port Trust, Saudi Business Council-NAJD Gateway Holding Company, Arif Habib Dolmen REIT Management Limited, and the Pakistan Corporate Consortium.
The project aims to transform the KPT waterfront into a modern commercial and maritime hub. It is expected to include business facilities, commercial infrastructure, investment spaces, and urban development features.
If completed, the project could become one of the largest waterfront commercial developments in the region.
Project Aims to Attract Investment and Jobs
Junaid Anwar Chaudhry described the partnership as a strategic opportunity for Pakistan. He said the project could unlock the full potential of Karachi Port Trustโs waterfront assets.
He added that the development could help position Pakistan as a regional hub for maritime commerce, trade, logistics, and investment.
The project is also expected to create employment opportunities and support economic activity in Karachi. Modern infrastructure around the port area could attract local and foreign investors.
The minister said all legal and regulatory requirements under Pakistani law would be completed before the project moves ahead.
He stressed that the MoU is an important first step. Further approvals, planning, and regulatory processes will be needed before construction or development begins.
Saudi Delegation Shows Interest in Maritime Sector
Members of the Saudi delegation expressed strong interest in wider cooperation with Pakistan in the maritime sector.
The discussions included possible Saudi involvement in port infrastructure, logistics, and related development projects.
Chaudhry said the visit is part of broader efforts by Pakistan and Saudi Arabia to deepen economic ties. Both countries are exploring investment opportunities in ports, logistics, infrastructure, trade facilitation, and maritime business.
The MoU reflects growing Saudi interest in Pakistanโs strategic port assets and commercial potential. Karachi Port remains one of the countryโs most important trade gateways.
The proposed waterfront district could give the city a new business identity if implemented successfully. It may also improve the use of port-linked urban land and create a modern commercial zone near the sea.
Officials believe the project can support Pakistanโs long-term maritime vision. It may also strengthen Karachiโs role as a regional trade and investment center.
