Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved a comprehensive reform roadmap for Pakistan Railways on Thursday. He chaired a high-level meeting in Islamabad to review the proposed reforms.
Officials presented detailed targets to improve passenger and freight services nationwide. The roadmap focuses on better governance, digitisation, and long-term financial sustainability.
Modernisation and Service Improvements
The reform strategy prioritises service quality, network expansion, and operational efficiency. Authorities will introduce modern coaches and improve facilities at railway stations.
The roadmap includes upgrades to ML-1, ML-2, ML-3, and several other railway routes. It also aims to strengthen regional connectivity through railway development.
Prime Minister Shehbaz said Pakistan Railways has significant potential for future growth. He described freight services as the backbone of the railway system and directed officials to prioritise the sector.
Investment and Economic Benefits
The prime minister ordered the hiring of international experts and consultants to support implementation. He said railway improvements would reduce pressure on roads and lower carbon emissions.
Shehbaz added that railway development would boost regional connectivity and increase economic activity. Revenue from private investment in railway land will support system improvements.
Several federal ministers and senior officials attended the meeting. Earlier, Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi said ML-1 work could begin in July 2026.
